A large stone in Emin’s back garden has found itself married to the renowned artist. Aside from the obvious bizarre nature of this matrimony, there are philosophical reasons for Emin to marry this object.
The reasons Emin gave Post magazine were:
“The stone is it’s not going anywhere.
Even if there’s the biggest tsunami in the whole world, the stone will probably still stay there.”
Further referring to this rock as being a metaphorical anchor, and no matter where she is in life “that stone is stability and comfort.
Emin is known for creating abstract installation pieces however to marry the piece is far beyond the conventions of an artist to work relationship. Why marry a stone in your garden? Well, we can only deduce this is Emin making a point of what marriage is, and commenting on the conventions of marriage between two consenting adults. Of course the rock is not moving and is unable to think and object to this matrimony, so in Emin’s eyes can be reliable and comforting.
It is to be debated whether the rock itself is the art piece or the concept is what makes us think of this as art. Although there is no imagery of this rock available online, suggesting that for Emin this is a personal endeavour or the concept is what she believes is the art form in this case.
